Bowen Island Community Center

The proposed Bowen Island Community Center is primarily a one-storey structure designed to house a variety of use spaces including an auditorium, a fitness centre, a community space, and municipal offices and comprises approximately 19,400 sq.ft.

The building structure will be comprised primarily of relatively simple conventional light wood frame construction consisting of dimensional lumber stud walls and prefabricated gang-nail trusses. Architecturally exposed glulam frames and plank decking are used at small multi-purpose room and “Living Room”.

These glulam frames will employ hidden or discrete connections. They have been designed in such a way that the high precision CNC connections can be fabricated off-site and erected on site with relatively simple connections with greater tolerances. It is anticipated that each set of beams will be assembled off-site and flown in as one unit to connect to the columns. Glued-in threaded rods with a discrete end plate between the beams were deemed the most preferable option from a visual and structural standpoint for the ridge connection. The end plate will be dapped into the beam ends to create a completely hidden connection.
