Ricardo graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal in 2004 and completed his PhD at the Universidade do Minho, Portugal, on the topic of “Safety Evaluation of Old Timber Structures” in 2010. His career started as a specialized timber consultant in Portugal, where he gained experience in CLT projects. He then joined Eurban Limited, in London, UK, where he worked on over 100 iconic mass timber projects, with focus on multi-storey CLT. Ricardo managed the Engineering team in the UK office and acted as the Senior Timber Engineer for many of the projects developed by the company during his tenure. In 2019, he moved to Vancouver to join the Katerra Mass Timber group (as part of Equilibrium), where he provided design assist services to many projects in the US and Canada. His duties included in-house coordination with the pre-construction, architectural, component design and install teams, as well as constant feedback with the sales team on VE opportunities on external mass timber projects and in the development of mass timber platforms / products for the company.
Ricardo is passionate about simple yet holistic mass timber structures, where engineering, procurement, constructability, etc., are all taken into consideration to create efficient and cost-competitive schemes, delivered and assembled in an optimal manner.
Outside of the office, Ricardo enjoys spending time with his close family, travelling and exploring new parts of the world, as well as coding and playing online strategy games.
