Amsterdam, Netherlands
The ABN AMRO Headquarters is a nine-storey office building for Holland’s largest bank, ABN AMRO, located at the Foppingadreef in Amsterdam’s Zuidoost area. Originally designed as a concrete structure, the building’s transition to mass timber was motivated by the firm’s commitment to the standards of the Paris Agreement. Given the ambitious pursuit of mass timber, the existing building required gutting in order to increase the efficiency of space planning, with the addition of more levels to the building and interconnected atria.
ASPECT was engaged in the spring of 2024 by Haring (the timber contractor) to provide Mass Timber Specialty Engineering. Given mass timber was a new material for some of the project team members, ASPECT’s role stemmed from the need to bridge the communication between the Timber Contractor and the Engineer of Record — both literally and technically. Through our role, ASPECT collaborated with the design team, applying our understanding of design, fabrication, and installation to review every decision in terms of constructability.
