North Vancouver, BC
An extensive renovation and addition to a 1950s mid-century modern home, creating a fresh concept while honouring the original structure. The scope included a complete seismic upgrade including support of the original brick fireplace which was maintained during construction. The structure, which was detailed to minimize visible fasteners, consists of light wood frame (new and existing), steel beams and columns, and concrete foundations (new and existing). Among the new features is a custom steel stair and guard rail that was designed to blend into the original bookcase, a key feature which was also maintained. A large cantilevering carport roof was also added, designed and supported off a custom fabricated and shaped column. Care was taken to thermally break exterior and interior elements to create an indoor-outdoor space that does not compromise building performance.
