Sunnyvale, GA
This five-storey office building is the first of Google’s mass timber developments, and incorporates new standards for structural design, construction techniques, material sourcing, and carbon reduction. The development prioritizes health and sustainability, which is in line with Google’s goal of using carbon-free energy across their building portfolio by 2030. This building is comprised of single and double-height spaces that are connected to a four-storey atrium, illuminated by a timber-glass skylight. Glulam beams and columns, as well as CLT panels, are left exposed throughout the interior, demonstrating the beauty of the timber used in this development.
ASPECT provided Temporary Works Engineering for this project, supporting the installer (Kinsol) in building this impressive mass timber structure safely and efficiently. Our team supported the huge
cantilevers with pre-camber during construction in a way to keep the beams level, and designed a temporary diaphragm with many steps for the timber-concrete-composite deck.
This building achieved LEED® Platinum certification, and was awarded the 2024 Wood in Architecture Awards through WoodWorks.
