Lauwelnew School Expansion

South Saanich Indian Reserve No. 1, BC

New Build & Renovation. 58,000 sq. ft.

The new Lauwelnew School facilities will be designed to accommodate students from K-4 to grade 12. The existing 17,000 sq. ft. elementary school will receive an additional 22,000 sq. ft. of floor area which will also house a gymnasium for both the elementary and secondary school. The existing 10,000 sq. ft. secondary school will receive an additional 9,000 sq. ft. The expansion will also potentially replace the old playground with a new covered play area. The new structures consist of glulam beams and joists, composite concrete and steel suspended floors, light wood frame bearing walls, and reinforced concrete shallow foundations. A steel truss spans the gym to support upper and lower roofs while allowing for a column free space between the seating area and the gym floor.
The existing school buildings are culturally very important as they are located in the main community of the Tsartlip First Nation.
