The Lawson Centre for Sustainability at the University of Toronto’s Trinity College is a new build, four-storey mixed-use building, offering both student residence and academic space. The goal of the development is to integrate sustainable design, resulting in a “living lab” for students to interact with, and benefit from, a healthy environment. In addition to residences, the building programming includes communal spaces, dining areas, seminar and learning rooms, offices, and event spaces.
The structure is comprised of hybrid timber construction, and is designed to meet LEED® Platinum standards and net zero carbon emissions. ASPECT was engaged after the design development phase and before construction, providing Mass Timber Specialty Engineering services. Our role involved working with the project team to provide mass timber connection details, which required tailoring of the base design to suit the connection strength and stiffness requirements. Special consideration was also given to architectural intent, fire safety, constructibility, and manufacturability.
