Penticton, BC
New build. 4100 sq. ft.
The first Passive House-certified child care centre in Canada, this building incorporates 4 child care areas, with associated washrooms, kitchen, storage, and office space. The design was approached with an acute awareness of the project’s budgetary restraints and Passive House requirements. In order to commit to an expedited construction schedule, the team had to also design an easily constructed and erected structural system. This all-wood solution uses a combination of industry-standard prefabricated structural elements (2x trusses) in combination with thermally broken conventional light woodframe walls. Donations in kind of labour and structural components (CLT) from Okanagan College and the surrounding community were also integrated into the structure and construction process. The result is a comfortable and well conditioned space well suited to allow (very) young minds to flourish.
