ASPECT’s work with Sidewalk Labs began with Quayside – a new approach to mixed-use, with a complete community on Toronto’s eastern Waterfront. The central development was planned as the largest mass timber development in the world. As the lead Structural Engineer for the project, ASPECT participated in a design exercise for several prototypical mass timber buildings (“PMX”), ranging from nine to 35 storeys. The exercise was completed to 100% Design Development.
PMX 35 was a 35-storey building design that aimed to push the boundaries of mass timber to a super tall, fully mass timber building. The structure of PMX 35 employs a unique timber exoskeleton system that prioritizes maximum use of space while delivering a safe and efficient building. ASPECT provided in put on fabrication, constructability, factory production, and supply chain management. The ASPECT team also drove research and development of several related novel structural products and systems, including the use of a tuned mass damper to control wind-induced vibrations.
