Jerusalem, Israel
Shaare Zedek Medical Center is one of Israel’s most prominent health science organizations and medical teaching facilities. The medical center’s vision for the new Helmsley Cancer Centre was to develop a therapeutic space for non-invasive treatments, ultimately aiding the psychology, spirit, and physical body of each patient. The six-storey building includes a mix of treatment areas, research and teaching facilities, seminar rooms and auditoriums, and outpatient services — all of which surround a large, three-storey atrium with natural light from the impressive skylight above.
Standing in contrast to the stone buildings typical to the area, this new cancer center is a concrete structure with a roof and façade comprised of cross laminated timber (CLT) and glulam beams. Spruce glulam was used for the interior spaces, including decoratively in the atrium space, while larch glulam is incorporated externally, creating the distinctive wing shape that has formed one of the largest and most intricate structures in the region.
ASPECT was engaged early in the design phases to set up the project for success with our Mass Timber Advisory Services, specifically working on the mass timber roof and atrium portions of this project.
