Thompson Rivers University School of Nursing and Population Health Building is a world-class, LEED® Gold building, designed to reduce emissions and energy consumption. The design of the building is responsive to both the BC Wood First Act and TRU’s Campus Sustainability Master Plan.
The building not only houses the University’s nursing and alliedhealth programs, but also provides teaching space for interdisciplinary teams (such as respiratory therapy, social work, and medical residency). This is in addition to classroom space, labs, interdisciplinary health clinics, home-care space, and breakout rooms. All of which create the opportunity for collaborative learning, and allow for additional student seats in the future.
ASPECT’s scope of work includes conceptual design of alternative structural systems, including mass timber / steel hybrid and reinforced concrete. Associated foundation options were also considered, as the site required special consideration to limit excessive differential settlements. The final detailed design consists of a reinforced concrete superstructure with a nail laminated timber roof at the atrium. Careful consideration of long-term deflections was required for both the flat slabs spanning up to nine metres, and the six-metre cantilevered concrete beams that support two-storeys above. The foundation consists of continuous flight auger piles, reinforced concrete pile caps, and grade beams.
