UFV Dining Hall Addition & Renovation

Abbotsford, BC

The renovation of the Dining Hall at the University of Fraser Valley (UFV) Abbotsford campus will add new second level floor space for dining, along with expansion of the kitchen/back-of-house. The architectural objectives for the addition will be achieved through a hybrid steel/mass timber structural system. Employing a lighter structural system like this has less impact on the existing structure, from both the gravity and seismic points of view. The structure of the dining hall addition remains independent of the original base building to minimize extra loads on the existing lateral system. As food services need to continue during the construction, special considerations have been made to provide a structure that can be installed with minimal disruption to the existing building and operations, allowing for construction to commence without unduly affecting the day-to-day operations of the University.
